How to Give

When you give effectively, you will be using your resources to create positive and lasting change in the community. Let's talk about how you can do it.
There are many ways that you can make a difference by giving. Some people establish family trusts or private ancillary funds (PAFs) as an effective way to manage their philanthropy. Others give through bequests, grants, scholarships or one-off donations. Recent research shows that as philanthropists, we are moving from an age of “cheque-book” philanthropy where we hand over a cheque and don’t worry about how or what it’s for, to an exciting era of social investment, where we actively engage in the giving process and the outcomes. If you are thinking about how to get started with your giving and want more advice or direction, get in touch with organisations that specialise in philanthropic services, social entrepreneurship, social innovation and social ventures. You will find examples of these organisations and links to some useful websites on our Social Innovation, Case Studies and Support Programs pages. In terms of how to distribute your giving, there are a few common vehicles you can use to make a tangible difference in the community. At Giving West, we have three main focus areas for giving.
Grants and Funding
By establishing a grant or scholarship, you can support a cause or ensure that your passion continues into future generations. Go to Grants & Funding
Private Ancillary Funds (PAFs)
Setting up a private ancillary fund allows you, your family or organisation to give in a highly effective, strategic and structured manner. Go to Private Ancillary Funds
Public Ancillary Funds (PuAFs)
Public ancillary funds are a very effective and efficient vehicle for organising public giving through various types of organisations and bodies. Go to Public Ancillary Funds
How to Find a Cause
With so many individuals and organisations that you can support, it’s important to find the right cause, or causes, to commit your giving to. This is a critical part of the giving process.
